During this time period, several other clubs we also interested in signing Mascherano, but River Plate turned down all of their offers, saying it wasn't enough.
In the 2005-2006 season, Mascherano joined the club Corinthians. After playing only nine games with this team, Mascherano suffered a fracture to his left foot, causing him to miss the next six months of soccer. This meant the Corinthians started their 2006 season without Mascherano, though he returned for their game against River Plate, which they lost. Though Mascherano caught the eye of European clubs, he stated how he wished to stay with the Corinthians to help them battle against relegation.
During the next season, Mascherano moved West Ham. Upon his arrival on the team, West Ham took a free fall and lost eight of the next nine games, tying only one.
